Shisha glossary: tobacco, packing and heat terms explained
What fluff, phunnel, HMD, dark leaf and heat tolerance actually mean: a hookah and shisha glossary covering tobacco, bowls, charcoal and packing.
Blond leaf, phunnel, semi-dense, HMD... Read a tobacco listing or talk to someone who has been around shisha for years and you will meet plenty of terms nobody ever explained. This glossary groups them by topic, with a short definition and a link to the guide that covers each one in depth.
Tobacco
- Blond leaf: usually Virginia. It tends to have less nicotine and a sweeter taste. See blond leaf vs dark leaf.
- Dark leaf: usually Burley, sometimes with Oriental leaf. It tends to have more nicotine and a stronger tobacco base.
- Strength: how intense the nicotine is, usually rated mild, medium or strong.
- Heat tolerance: how much temperature the tobacco takes before burning. It can be delicate, normal or tough. More in the heat tolerance guide.
- Molasses: the mix of honey, sugars and glycerine in the tobacco. Levels run from dry to juicy, as the molasses guide explains.
- Cut: the size of the shred (fine, medium or coarse). It affects airflow and packing.
- Cooling effect: the cold sensation from menthol or ice flavourings.
- School: the tradition a tobacco belongs to (Russian, American, German...). We go through them in shisha tobacco schools.
Bowls
- Phunnel: a bowl with a single raised central hole, which holds the molasses back.
- Traditional: a bowl with several holes in the base. We compare both in phunnel vs traditional.
- Glazed: has a vitreous coating that makes cleaning easier and absorbs fewer flavours.
- Unglazed (mud): the bare clay is exposed and absorbs molasses with use.
- White clay, black clay, stoneware: materials that change how the bowl heats up. See the clay types guide.
Heat management
- HMD (heat management device): a piece that holds the coals above the bowl and helps regulate temperature.
- Kaloud Lotus: a metal HMD that sits on the bowl without foil.
- Provost: an HMD with an adjustable lid, placed on thick foil.
- Chimney or badcha: a grate that lifts the coals away from the tobacco. You regulate heat by moving them towards the centre or the edge.
- Foil: the classic setup, with the coals placed directly on top.
How to use each one is covered in the heat management guide.
Charcoal
- Coconut charcoal: pressed charcoal made from coconut shell. It needs a burner to light properly.
- Quick-light: charcoal that catches in seconds thanks to additives, so it can leave odours.
- Cube: the most common shape, mostly 25 to 27 mm per side.
- Flat: a lower shape with more contact surface.
You will find the sizes in the coconut charcoal guide.
Packing
- Fluffy: loose, airy tobacco, not pressed.
- Semi-dense: slightly pressed tobacco.
- Dense: tobacco pressed into the bowl.
- Sector pack: each flavour takes its own part of the bowl.
- Layering: one flavour below and another on top, so the taste changes during the session.
- Homogeneous mix: tobaccos chopped and mixed before packing.
Pressure levels are covered in how to pack a shisha bowl and combining techniques in the blending guide.
