Shisha tobacco heat tolerance: delicate, normal and tough

What it means for a shisha tobacco to be delicate, normal or tough, how to tell when it is burning, and what to do to try to bring the flavour back.

Two tobaccos can need very different heat in the same bowl with the same HMD. That difference is heat tolerance: the temperature a tobacco takes before it burns and loses its flavour. Knowing it helps you adjust the coals before something goes wrong.

The three levels

These are the same levels you will see in Humarea catalogue listings. The coal counts are a starting point using 26 mm cubes on an HMD, not a rule: results change with the bowl, the pack and the ventilation.

ToughDarkHandles heat spikes and usually recoversUp to 3 coals sustained

Why some leaves take more heat

Blond leaf is thinner and burns at a lower temperature. Dark leaf is thicker and denser and has gone through more intense curing, so it handles spikes better. For the other differences, see blond leaf vs dark leaf.

There is one common exception: some blond tobaccos take more heat than expected because they come saturated with molasses and glycerine. That protection only lasts a while: once it runs out, the leaf behaves like what it is.

How to tell you have overheated it

  • The smoke turns harsh or rough on the throat.
  • A charcoal or burnt taste replaces the flavouring.
  • The flavour loses nuance from one draw to the next.
  • The tobacco surface darkens and dries out too early.

What to do if it is burning

  1. Remove a coal or move it towards the edge.
  2. Open or lift the HMD to let the built-up heat out.
  3. Wait a minute before judging the flavour again.
  4. Go back with less heat than you had.

With dark leaf, this often brings the flavour almost fully back. With blond leaf it is harder: once the surface has burnt, the taste usually won't be the same again. That is why it pays to raise the heat gradually with delicate tobaccos.

The rest of the setup matters too

Tobacco tolerance is only one part. The bowl's clay type changes how heat arrives, and the size of the coconut charcoal changes how much heat there is. For fine-tuning, see the heat management guide.

Check each tobacco's heat tolerance

Catalogue listings in Humarea show each tobacco's heat tolerance, and you can filter by it.
